Wilko to shut 14 stores days after planning to appoint administrators - see full list

Wilko has confirmed 14 sites will shut just days after the retail store chain admitted it was on the edge of entering administration.

The retailer announced it had filed its "notice of intention" to the high court - which put 12,500 jobs and a total of 400 stores at risk, including 16 in Greater Manchester. But some of the bargain chain stores at risk could be rescued after it was revealed there are "significant levels of interest," reports the Mirror.

Wilko chief executive Mark Jackson said he will continue to push the interested parties to "move as fast as possible." In a statement, he explained: "We’ll continue to progress discussions with interested parties with the aim of completing a transaction which preserves the business and will encourage those interested parties we’re in discussions with to move as fast as possible."

Wilko, which was first founded in Leicester in 1930, previously announced its plans to shut over a dozen stores last year. In February, shoppers and workers were told that more than 400 jobs were put at risk after Wilko revealed its restructuring plan.

Jackson previously said that the retailer was finding it difficult to secure a buyer quickly enough. His statement said: "While we can confirm we’ve had a significant level of interest, including indicative offers that we believe would meet all our financial criteria to recapitalise the business, at present. Unfortunately, with this in mind, today we’re having to take the difficult decision to file a NOI."
