Boy, 12, killed in M62 hit-and-run horror crash

A boy aged 12 died after he was hit by a car on the M62 which police said failed to stop. Police chiefs said they believe the youngster was 'trying to make his way from the central reservation to the hard shoulder' when he was hit.

He was found on the opposite carriageway, West Yorkshire Police said as the force issued an urgent appeal for witnesses.

A 36-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing or allowing the death of a child and is currently in custody for questioning.

"The vehicle involved failed to stop at the scene," said a force spokesman. Police received earlier reports, shortly after 9.30pm, of a single-vehicle collision involving an Audi Q5 on the slip road to Hartshead Services, followed by subsequent reports immediately before the fatal collision of two people walking along the motorway.

"Emergency services in attendance at the scene located a man on the hard shoulder of the motorway. He was taken to hospital for treatment for minor injuries," added the spokesman.
