Wigan’s Liam Marshall hailed for heroics in dramatic Challenge Cup win

Wigan coach Matt Peet was delighted for Liam Marshall to score the match-winning try in the Challenge Cup final after overcoming adversity in his career.

Marshall scored in the 77th minute to seal a dramatic 16-14 victory for his hometown club Wigan over Huddersfield in the Challenge Cup final at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Speaking after the game, Peet said: “He is good under pressure and his instincts are great. But for me, it is just rewards.

“It is well documented just how resilient Liam has been in his career. I love what he brings to the group. I love the way he never gives in.

“If you look at his career, he was so slight as a junior and didn’t get on scholarships. He constantly looked too small to get to the next level and it was that resilience and toughness what kept him in the game when others weren’t.”

Huddersfield coach Ian Watson says the best team lost in the final

Peet took over the head coaching reins at the Warriors in the off-season. He couldn’t have wished for a better start to life as a head coach having won a major trophy at the first time of asking.

He said: “It certainly hasn’t sunk in but I’m looking forward to it sinking in. I’m looking forward to the town, players and staff celebrating the moment because we’ve worked very hard. I’m delighted and proud.

“I can sit here happy and proud because I know people are happy. We’ve played a part in helping the fans have a great weekend.

“I could name so many people who have all contributed in their own separate way who bring energy to that performance. I can sit anywhere tonight and be equally happy just thinking about them.”
