Challenge Cup records impressive viewing figures

The 2022 Challenge Cup final recorded impressive viewing figures over the weekend.

The final between Huddersfield and Wigan attracted an average BBC TV audience of more than 1.1million. There was also a peak of 1.5million on Saturday afternoon.

On a busy sporting Saturday only the UEFA Champions League Final attracted a greater TV audience. Rugby league’s showpiece event enjoyed an increase of 23% on the average audience for the 2021 final.

It was also the second highest viewing figures since 2014. It was bettered only by the 2020 final which was played behind closed doors at Wembley.

Wigan went on to win the final 16-14, with a 76th Liam Marshall try securing Matt Peet his first major trophy as the Warriors’ head coach. Giants back-rower Chris McQueen claiming the Lance Todd trophy. Harry Smith and Jai Field also scoring for the DW Stadium side.
