Wigan Athletic star reveals plan for Manchester United fixture in FA Cup third round

Wigan Athletic winger Callum McManaman has encouraged his teammates to 'express themselves' ahead of Monday night's FA Cup third round tie against Manchester United at the DW Stadium.

The League One Latics, who have reached the third round as a result of wins over Exeter City and York City, will be hoping to produce an upset and add to United's woes. The Reds will be itching to get back to winning ways after their 2-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest last weekend marked a fifth defeat in eight.

Wigan, who are currently 18th in League One, have not faced United since 2017, losing 4-0 to them in the FA Cup at the fourth round stage. Just over 12 months later, the Latics dumped Manchester City out of the competition at the fifth round stage, winning 1-0.

With the Latics not immune to producing an FA Cup upset, McManaman, who scooped the Man of the Match award at the end of the 2013 FA Cup final, helping Wigan beat City 1-0 at Wembley, is looking forward to rubbing shoulders with the Reds, insisting he and his teammates have nothing to lose in pursuit of a huge upset.

"I have great memories [of the FA Cup] but we're looking forward to Monday," said McManaman. "All the lads are buzzing.

"The atmosphere around the place is really good. I don't think we could've got a better draw to be honest. We've got nothing to lose. We just need to go out there, express ourselves and be confident."

McManaman, 32, is currently in his third spell as a Wigan player. And he knows that he will never have to buy a drink in the town again after playing his part in 2013's heroics.
