Why VAR will not be used in Manchester United Carabao Cup quarter-final vs Tottenham

Manchester United will have an eye on reaching the semi-final of the Carabao Cup when they face Tottenham Hotspur this week.

Ruben Amorim's side travel to North London to take on Spurs on Thursday evening in the quarter-final of the EFL Cup. United go into the game on the back of the dramatic 2-1 victory over Manchester City in the Premier League at the weekend and will be determined to get another win during their trip to the capital.

United's clash against Tottenham is one of three quarter-final matches taking place this week. Liverpool will travel to face Southampton, Newcastle take on Brentford and Arsenal will host Crystal Palace, with all three fixtures taking place on Wednesday evening, 24 hours before Amorim and Co. face Spurs.

Amorim will have become accustomed to VAR being in use in the Premier League and Champions League during his time as United manager. However, despite the video assistant referee being a common feature in top-flight matches, it won't be used in the Carabao Cup until the semi-final stage, reports football.london.

This has been the case since the 2019/20 season, which marked the second season that the technology was used in the tournament. The 2018/19 campaign saw VAR used in all rounds before eventually being rolled out to the Premier League the following campaign. The absence of VAR, up to the semi-final, helps ensure no club gains an unfair advantage in the early rounds of the competition.
