Why Scott McTominay will captain Manchester United against Liverpool FC

Erik ten Hag has named Scott McTominay as his Manchester United captain because he is an 'example of what it means to wear the badge'.

Bruno Fernandes is unavailable due to suspension and Christian Eriksen and Mason Mount are still sidelined with injuries, so Ten Hag has picked a midfield of Kobbie Mainoo, Sofyan Amrabat and McTominay to play Liverpool.

McTominay will wear the captain's armband at Anfield and he'll play in the No.10 role behind Rasmus Hojlund.

Hojlund will be supported by Alejandro Garnacho and Antony on the left and right wing respectively, which means Marcus Rashford has been named on the bench again following his return to the squad after illness.

In defence, Raphael Varane will partner Jonny Evans, who will work alongside Diogo Dalot and Luke Shaw at the back.

Ten Hag spoke to MUTV ahead of kick-off and explained why McTominay has the armband: "I think he's the example for what it means to wear the badge and play for Manchester United. He will be the example of passion and desire, and others can build on that."

When asked about his selection, he said: "We have a squad, so everyone knows our principles and rules. Then you have to pick a team, look at the opponent, but the most important thing is how we are.

"The game against Bayern, he [Shaw] had some problems before at half-time and we had to take him out at that point because it would have been a risk and in this moments, you don't want that because we were battling to stay in Europe, but we had to do it [take him off] because the risk was too high.
