Why Rangers star Calvin Bassey isn't nominated for PFA Young Player of the Year award despite picking up Ibrox prize

Rangers star Calvin Bassey has not been named in the shortlist for PFA Scotland's Young Player of the Year award.

The defender has shone this season in Gio van Bronckhorst 's side, proving that he is a capable candidate for left back and centre back.

The 22-year-old Nigerian international has been consistent both domestically and in Europe this campaign.

His performances saw the youngster bag the Young Player of the Year award in Rangers' club ceremony on Monday night - but he will not be doubling his prize tally by winning the PFA's version this year.

And it has left some Rangers fans wondering why.

The nominations for the award were revealed on Wednesday with Aberdeen duo Calvin Ramsay and Connor Barron, Celtic 's Liel Abada, and Dundee United's Ross Graham making up the list.

The simple answer? He is too old.

The PFA Scotland rules read: "The Young Player of the Year category is voted for across all leagues so any player under 21 years of age on the first day of the season is eligible."

Bassey was born on Hogmanay 1999, which means he was already 21 before the season started.

It means that he is therefore ineligible for the award.
