Why Marcus Rashford is on the bench for Manchester United vs Chelsea fixture

Erik ten Hag has said Marcus Rashford and Antony Martial have been benched for Machester United's game against Chelsea due to rotation.

Rashford has struggled for form this season and he's scored just twice in all competitions, with usual penalty taker Bruno Fernandes allowing him to score a penalty against Everton for his most recent goal.

The 26-year-old started in the 1-0 defeat against Newcastle at St. James' Park last weekend and his performance received heavy criticism, with many fans calling for him to lose his starting role against Chelsea.

Antony will start on the right wing on Wednesday night and he'll be joined by Rasmus Hojlund and Alejandro Garnacho in attack.

Ten Hag has also made changes in defence and midfield, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Kobbie Mainoo moving to the bench to accommodate Diogo Dalot and Sofyan Amrabat respectively.

Ahead of kick-off, Ten Hag spoke to Amazon Prime and said: "We had one week, six days, two very good performances and on Saturday, it was a bad performance, so we have to put this right.

"We showed in the two performances before, when we played very good in and out of possession."

When asked why Rashford and Martial had been dropped, he said: "We played bad as a team [against Newcastle], so we can't blame individuals for it. It's part of rotation. I think we have a very good, energised front line and everyone has to be ready.
