Why Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho was not given a penalty vs Tottenham

Manchester United forward Alejandro Garnacho has been told the contact was too minimal for him to receive a penalty during the Red Devils' 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur.

United started the game on the front foot and took the lead inside three minutes thanks to a fierce strike by Rasmus Hojlund. Spurs managed to settle and were level a quarter of an hour later as Richarlison's flicked header beat Andre Onana.

Marcus Rashford ensured the Reds entered half-time ahead as he expertly placed a strike beyond Guglielmo Vicario. Unfortunately for Erik ten Hag's team, the points were shared as Rodrigo Bentancur scored moments after the restart.

Garnacho felt United should have been given an opportunity to extend their advantage further in the first half when he felt he was tugged to the ground by defender Destiny Udogie. Referee John Brooks chose to play on much to the annoyance of the home fans.

However, reflecting on the incident for Ref Watch, former Premier League official Dermot Gallagher felt the man in the middle made the right call. He explained: "I didn't think there was enough in it for there to be a penalty.

"But as a defender, why would you do this? Why would you run the risk? He doesn't have to do that. It doesn't look right, does it?

"He's got hold of him, making contact, but he's not pulled him down. I'd have been really surprised if a penalty had been given."

Speaking at full-time, as quoted by the Evening Standard, Ten Hag held a different opinion on the incident. He said: "Yes. What can you do? But I am used to it, all season that is the case.
