Why Manchester United signing Karim Benzema would not repeat Cristiano Ronaldo transfer mistake

When Sir Alex Ferguson came calling in the noughties, there were very few men who didn't bend to his will to get a deal done.

In 2008 though, finances prevented Ferguson from sealing a move for Karim Benzema. The legendary Scot had his top price and was not willing, or able, to go a penny over it. The Lyon forward would waste no time though to look elsewhere.

Perhaps it is ironic 14 years on that it is money which will play an integral part again as United find themselves linked with a move for the French forward. While the Reds may have been in control of the narrative back then, it is their tight budget now which sees them dictated towards the striker.

During the time which has passed since Ferguson's initial approach, Benzema has managed to win it all at Real Madrid, it was therefore a surprise to see him leave the La Liga giants in the summer for a new chapter in Saudi Arabia. His performances for Al Ittihad have been fine without being notable but there is certainly enough experience in him to be deemed an asset should he move to Old Trafford.

Of course, there are notable and valid concerns about Benzema being just another Cristiano Ronaldo. A big superstar coming to United in a move which will inevitably end in tears.

However, this time could be different thanks to the logistics of the transfer. Ronaldo's second spell at United ended sourly because it never seemed like he truly wanted to be there again.
