Why Manchester United allowed Antony to take their penalty vs Barnsley

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag confirmed Marcus Rashford allowed Antony to take his penalty during Manchester United's 7-0 League Cup dismantling of Barnsley.

Antony earned the 35th-minute spot-kick that Rashford was preparing to take before Casemiro sidled over to his compatriot, who then stepped up to put United 2-0 ahead.

All four of United's wingers have now scored this season, with Alejandro Garnacho on four goals, Rashford on three and Antony and Amad on one apiece.

Ten Hag agreed the quartet are pushing each other on. "Yes, I think so. I think they are very ambitious, they are very hungry but what you also see is they give each other the ball.

"They also give assists and they give each other the opportunity to score a goal like the pen' when Antony needs some confidence. Then Rashy gives the pen' to Antony, which is good in a team, which they are, they are together."

Garnacho has also tallied three assists this season, having created both of Rashford's goals against Barnsley, despite only making two starts.

The 20-year-old could be back on the bench away to Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Saturday amid Amad's fine form but Ten Hag disagreed with suggestions he is dropping players.

"Yeah, there will be rotation and the conclusion from all of you is not right when I pick 11 that I drop a player," Ten Hag opined. "I pick a starting XI because I know I have to rotate.

"We have more than 11 players who can be in the line-up of any match in this moment."
