Why Ederson was not in Man City training before Crvena Zvezda fixture

Ederson missed Manchester City training on Tuesday, but is not expected to be out for any long period.

City take on Crvena Zvezda in the Champions League on Wednesday for their final Group G contest, knowing they cannot be caught at the top of the group. The hosts are also unable to qualify for either the last-16 or the Europa League and will finish fourth in the group whatever Wednesday's result.

That gives Pep Guardiola licence to rotate his squad and rest some key players, with Ederson a likely candidate to sit out even before his absence from training on Tuesday - which has been put down to illness rather than injury.

In his place, Stefan Ortega is set to start as City's second goalkeeper for his fifth appearance of the season. He played City's last Champions League game - against RB Leipzig at home - when Guardiola decided to rest Ederson following his return from international duty.

Scott Carson will provide back-up, with no academy goalkeepers seen in training on Tuesday as they have their own UEFA Youth League tie to play on Wednesday. True Grant and George Murray-Jones have rotated in goal for Brian Barry-Murphy's under-19s, who are also safely through to the knockout stages as group winners.

Erling Haaland, Jeremy Doku and Kevin De Bruyne remain out and were not in training on Tuesday, while Guardiola called up four academy players to training. Forward Micah Hamilton has already been on the bench for City in the Champions League as he is too old to be eligible for the Youth League, while centre-back Max Alleyne, and midfielders
