Why Amad, Antony and Christian Eriksen are not in the Manchester United squad vs Wigan

Amad and Christian Eriksen are out of Manchester United's FA Cup tie against Wigan through illness while Antony is also absent due to injury.

Scott McTominay and Rasmus Hojlund have replaced Eriksen and Antony in the only changes from the 2-1 Premier League defeat to Nottingham Forest nine days ago.

Amad replaced Antony early in the second half at the City Ground for his first United appearance in more than two years but he is the latest squad member to succumb to illness.

The 21-year-old made his return from a five-month lay-off with a knee injury against Forest and he was not called up by the Ivory Coast for the Africa Cup of Nations.

The setbacks mean United are without 12 players at the DW Stadium. Lisandro Martinez (foot) and Casemiro have resumed team training but United manager Erik ten Hag said on Thursday the pair were still "weeks" away from a playing return.

Mason Mount (calf) has started outdoor training again but Tyrell Malacia (knee), Harry Maguire (groin), Victor Lindelof (groin), Luke Shaw and Anthony Martial (ill) are all still unavailable. Sofyan Amrabat is on international duty with Morocco ahead of the AFCON.

The unavailability of Eriksen, Antony and Amad means United have recorded 38 separate cases of injury and illness this season.
