Why 99 Flakes are more expensive in 2024 as Brits left furious over price hike

Everyone loves a 99 Flake from the ice cream van.

It consists of a cone with soft ice cream, topped with your choice of sauce and of course, a chocolate flake. Back in the day, it used to cost less than a quid, although that's a thing of the past.

The origin of the name '99' Flake has been a topic of curiosity recently. And lately, there's been quite the grumble over their escalating costs. On X, previously known as Twitter, one individual lamented: "I remember when '99 Flakes were actually 99p!"

Another queried: "Can someone just make 99 Flakes actually 99p?" While a third person expressed shock at current pricing: "99P FLAKES ARE £1.50."

If you're curious about the hike in prices, Jonathon Sitson from QuickWhip offered some insight in light of National Ice Cream Day on July 21. He explained: "The main reason for the price increase in Mr Whippys is inflation.

"The cost of everything from milk and cream to fuel for the vans and machines has risen dramatically. This means Mr Whippy vendors have to pay more for their supplies, so they have to raise their prices to stay in business. Nobody wants to lose this particular British traditional."

Data from the ONS indicates that ice cream costs have surged by 45% over the past three years, highlighting the potential severity of price increases if vendors were to pass on the full extent of the rises.

Jonathon explained further: "Another reason could be sugar taxes on certain products like ice cream that can affect other countries. The interest in an ice-cream man is also seasonal, meaning that with a wet summer so far, and many big days being a wash-out, some vendors may be running at a loss or be forced to increase prices to makeup for lost revenue.
