Team GB's Eilish McColgan's famous mum and heartache over stolen medals

Team GB's Eilish McColgan will be putting her best foot forward tonight (Friday) as she runs the 10,000m final at the Stade De France. Born in 1990, Eilish's first Olympics was London 2012.

But although the elite athlete will always be going for gold, she spent some time in the shadow of her famous mum, Liz Nuttall nee McColgan. Scottish Liz is an MBE who bagged a silver medal at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul - one of 13 career medals.

That's until the records started to fall - in 1991, Liz’s 10,000m best time of 30:57.07, moved her to second in the world at that time and stood as the Scottish record until 2022. She only lost it when it was broken by her own daughter Eilish.

But medal woe has also come Eilish's way, when thieves broke into her Manchester home and stole priceless athletics medals and commemorative keepsakes from previous Olympics and Commonwealth Games.

Eilish, 33, wrote on a Facebook group in 2019 that thieves locked her dog in a lounge and left her East Didsbury home 'completely ransacked'. The Scottish runner said her British Championship medals were taken alongside items of jewellery and a necklace she said was a Christmas gift from her mum.

"Never been so angry in my life," she said, adding: "Not sure what they've stolen yet.. other than all my jewellery, some things I had kept from the Olympics and a few medals. Horrible horrible scum."

Eilish has had a rough few months, as her stepfather John died last November followed by the death of her beloved gran Betty Lynch - mother of Liz - in May.
