Who is Tanner Tessmann? The Celtic transfer 'target' who comes with an eye for goal and bargain price tag

Celtic are reportedly in the mix for American midfielder Tanner Tessmann after Inter's move for the Venezia playmaker dramatically collapsed.

The American was a standout for the Venice side in their promotion to Serie A last season and has attracted plenty of interest over the last fewyears. A two-time USA cap, Venezia won the race for him in 2021 - and he's since evolved from a robust midfield enforcer into a creative force despite a turbulent period at the Italian club. They'll be back in the Italian top flight this season - but it's likely to be without Tessmann.

News of Celtic's interest first came from Gianluca Di Marzio, who says the Hoops have joined Brentford, as well as Italy's Torino, Parma and Como in pursuing the 22-year-old. There's also been interest from Everton in the past, while Ipswich had reportedly hoped his move to Inter would go through so they could sign him on loan. So, what's all the fuss about?

A central midfielder who started playing soccer at collegiate level in Alabama, Tessmann's talent was spotted by FC Dallas in MLS who signed him to their academy in 2016. Then just 15, he quickly rose through the ranks, making his first-team debut in 2021. And he was just 19 games into his career as a senior pro when he was handed his first USA cap by Gregg Berhalter.

Venezia gave him his European breakthrough in 2021, paying just over £3m to bring him to Italy. A 20-year-old in his first season abroad, he initially struggled in Serie A - particularly with Venezia themselves scrambling to keep their heads above water. They dropped into Serie B, but that proved to be a blessing in disguise for Tessmann.
