Greater Manchester has been hit by heavy downpours with a 'severe danger to life' warning set to come into force today (May 22).

The Met Office amber rain warning - which covers all of our region, as well as parts of Lancashire, Merseyside, Cheshire and north Wales - comes into place at 12pm. It will last until 12pm tomorrow (May 23) with heavy downpours expected for most of that time.

Persistent and heavy rain is forecast in our region for the entire day today (May 22). The showers are expected through until Thursday morning (May 23) as rain clouds sweep over much of England.

Forecasters at the Met Office have predicted heavy rain will fall at every hour through the morning, afternoon and evening. The heavy rain is expected to continue to fall into the early hours of tomorrow morning, before the showers begin to ease off from around 6am.

More heavy downpours are then expected at around 10am tomorrow before showers turn lighter again into tomorrow afternoon. Tomorrow (May 23) is set to feel slightly cooler with temperatures reaching highs of around 12C.

The rain looks set to let up slightly on Friday (May 24) with cloudy and dry conditions predicted. In Greater Manchester and the areas covered by the amber warning, forecasters are warning that 'flooding and disruption is likely'.

'Fast flowing or deep floodwater is likely' which could 'cause a danger to life'. It is also likely that the heavy rain will cause delays or cancellations on trains and bus services over the coming days as well as difficult driving conditions and some road closures.

A yellow weather warning for rain is also in place
