What Manchester United star said after Everton draw should worry Ruben Amorim
Diogo Dalot claimed Manchester United completed a late turnaround against Everton because they “actually did what we trained” after a torrid opening 45 minutes. While it's great to hear the manager's plan worked in the second half, what exactly were the players doing in the first half?
United struggled to deal with Everton's style of play, not registering a shot on target until Bruno Fernandes’ free-kick 72 minutes in. After four months in charge, Ruben Amorim is struggling to get the message across to his players side. And Dalot's comments should set alarm bells ringing.
Of course, the squad is far from used to Amorim’s style of play and patience will be needed. New signing Patrick Dorgu had the second-most touches out of any player on the pitch, proving the importance of having natural wing-backs in Amorim’s system.
Dalot added during the interview that Amorim had told his players “not to come into the game the way they (Everton) wanted to play with long balls and second balls”. United came into the game with a plan to play the game at their own tempo, but that plan didn't come into action until the final 20 minutes of the game.
Slow starts have become the norm at United of late, with the side only scoring one first-half goal in the league since the start of December.
It is true that a lot of United’s players don't fit Amorim’s system. Dalot himself is not a natural wing back and has struggled for form since the manager's arrival.
Amorim said in his post-match press conference that he told his players at half-time “no matter what the result, we are going to do what we did during the week”. Since arriving at Old Trafford, he has repeatedly stated the importance of a full week's training with his players. Something
