What Leicester City will do in huge year of decisions as 10 stars enter last year of their deals
Eldin Jakupovic waved goodbye to Leicester City this summer, the third-choice goalkeeper out of contract and not offered an extension. He was the only senior player whose deal expired this year.
That is in stark contrast to what is coming City’s way over the next 12 months. There are 10 members of their senior squad who are now entering the final year of their contracts at the King Power Stadium.
Of those 10, Youri Tielemans is the one currently grabbing the headlines as Arsenal mull over a move for the Belgian midfielder, and he mulls over whether the Gunners are a step up from City. But he’s not the only high-profile player on the list.
Here’s a rundown of the players entering the final year of their deals at City, and what might happen between now and next summer. There are decisions to be made.
As City’s number one for 11 seasons, Schmeichel is a club icon. But it seems an emotional farewell is just around the corner. The Dane has spoken of potentially heading elsewhere before his career ends, while City are understood to have been scouring the market for possible new goalkeepers. Both of those factors make it unlikely right now that Schmeichel’s deal will be extended beyond next summer.
Soyuncu is one of a few players on this list who may leave before getting to play out the final year of their contracts. He was City’s most-used defender last season, but it also coincided with a downturn in form, and by the end of the campaign, he had dropped to fourth in the centre-back pecking order, signalling an exit on the cards. He is a first-class defender on his day, and so City will hope to fetch a decent fee for him.
Last season was his seventh at City and it was his best. He was called upon regularly by Brendan Rodgers
