What happened on Mason Greenwood debut for Getafe in first appearance since Manchester United exit

Mason Greenwood made his first appearance in 18 months when he came off the bench for Getafe in their 3-2 win over Osasuna on Sunday afternoon.

The 21-year-old was named in the Getafe squad for the first time since his deadline-day exit for Manchester United but would have to wait until the later stages of the game to make his debut. Greenwood was brought onto the field in the 77th minute with the scores level at 2-2 and celebrated with his new teammates when Nemanja Maksimovic netted a winner ten minutes later from a corner he had won.

It marked the youngster's first appearance since January 2022, after being suspended by United amid allegations of attempted rape, assault, and coercive control. In February of this year, the Crown Prosecution Service said all charges against him had been dropped. Greenwood has always denied the allegations.

Last month, United stated they had concluded their own investigation and felt it was best that Greenwood continue his career elsewhere. His contract at Old Trafford still runs until 2025.

Stefan Mitrovic gave Getafe the lead against Osasuna before Iker Munoz equalised for the visitors on the stroke of half-time. Jose Angel Carmona fired the hosts back into the lead shortly after the break, before an Ante Budimir penalty drew the sides level again shortly after.

Maksimovic scored the winner four minutes from time via a corner won by Greenwood, a result that lifts Getafe up to ninth in the La Liga table after five matches and is only their second win of the new league season.
