Getafe call for 'respect' towards their players following Mason Greenwood chants

La Liga club Getafe have called for an end to 'insulting chants' aimed at their players after opposition supporters directed songs at Manchester United loanee Mason Greenwood.

Greenwood joined Getafe on transfer deadline day after he was suspended by United in January 2022 amid allegations of attempted rape, assault and coercive control. The Crown Prosecution Service, back in February this year, confirmed that all charges against the forward had been dropped. Greenwood has always denied the allegations.

United announced after an investigation they would help the player find a move away from the Reds and secured the forward a loan switch to Spain this summer. It has been widely reported that chants of "Greenwood, muérete!" [Greenwood die] were briefly sung by some Osasuna supporters when the player featured for his loan club in a 3-2 win for his side on September 17 and Getafe have now released a statement condemning the chants.

The statement released on Thursday read: "Getafe CF wants to express its total disapproval of the derogatory and intolerant chants, especially serious insults, which have been occurring repeatedly during the days of the La Liga EA Sports National Championship and which damage the image and also the morale of our players and technicians.

"Some insulting chants, outside any civic context, aggravated with criticism we respect as freedom of expression, from a sporting point of view, but we do NOT share when derogatory qualifiers, insults and disrespect are attributed to the members of that critical movement of the Getafe CF squad and coaching staff.
