Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge reckons there’s no reason why Steven Bergwijn can’t play up front for Tottenham more often.
Tottenham have been searching for a Harry Kane backup for some time, but they could already have a ready-made frontman in the flying Dutchman.
What’s the latest news with Bergwijn?
The 24-year-old has played through the middle more than 25 times in his playing career but has predominantly been deployed out wide.
However, with Spurs’ first-choice front three made up of Heung Min Son, Lucas Moura, and Kane, Bergwijn has seen his opportunities limited in recent months.
Ahead of January, Conte suggested that he could become an option as a number nine following Tottenham’s struggles to bring in an understudy to Kane.
Bergwijn showed his striker instincts by scoring two centre-forward-like goals against Leicester last month, while the majority of his goals in English football down the middle.
He was then rewarded with a start alongside Kane Chelsea in Tottenham’s last Premier League game, although that was more down to the fact that Heung Min Son was out injured, and Lucas Moura wasn’t fit enough to start.
But Bridge reckons there’s no reason why he can’t have a future role as a striker, especially with Spurs once again failing to add one to their squad in January.
