What Diego Carlos has said about his future as Aston Villa transfer talk intensifies

Aston Villa are being heavily linked with a summer move for Sevilla defender Diego Carlos as they look ahead to what is likely to be a busy transfer window.

Villa are said to be in ‘negotiations’ over a move for the 29-year-old as they look to get one over on Newcastle United. The Magpies pushed hard for the player during January but were unable to break Sevilla’s resolve.

Speaking in the weeks after Newcastle’s attempts, Carlos insisted that he didn’t take any notice of the talk over his future. “I was always very calm, I have a commitment, my contract here at Sevilla,” he told ABC Sevilla back in February.

“Nothing ever happened in my head nor did I go crazy with the situation. With everything that was talked about, I was working and competing, I think I did well.

“I told the coach that he could safely count on me because my head was at Sevilla, it is a club that opened doors for me and to them, I will be grateful all my life.

“At Sevilla, I am growing every day, being a more mature and confident player.”

The defender did though send a hint that he may be willing to move on, should an agreement be reached between two clubs. Comments that will come as a good sign to Villa’s hopes of signing him this summer.

“If they reached an agreement and it turned out to be positive for me, fine, but since nothing concrete came to me that could make me leave Sevilla, at all times I was calm,” he added. “I feel very good at the club, I’m very happy to be here.

“I will continue to do my best because football is like that, today you are there and tomorrow you are not, and now I am, so we will see what will happen.”
