Whaley Bridge murder probe launched after man dies in suspected burglary

A man has died following a suspected burglary in a High Peak town near Greater Manchester. Officers were called out to reports of a burglary at a property on Eccles Road, in Whaley Bridge, at 1.20am this morning (May 1).

Derbyshire Police says that officers found a man at the scene who had sustained fatal injuries. A second man was found with serious injuries nearby, in the same road.

He has been taken to hospital and arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary. A third man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder.

He remains in police custody for questioning this afternoon. Officers remain at two scenes, at two houses on Eccles Road.

The cordons are expected to remain in place for some time. Enquiries are ongoing and anyone with information about the incident is being urged to come forward.

Divisional Commander Chief Superintendent Dave Kirby, of Derbyshire Police, said: “This is an understandably concerning incident for this small rural community. However, while we are in the early stages of the investigation, we believe this is a targeted incident.

“Residents will see an increased police presence as enquiries continue and we will give further updates as soon as possible. In the meantime, I would ask that people limit speculation and allow officers to conduct their investigation unhindered."

Anyone with information is urged to contact Derbyshire Police online, by calling 101, or through Facebook or X, using reference 36 of May 1. Alternatively, contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
