Wexford club at centre of alleged assault 'indefinitely' bans member

The GAA club at the centre of incident involving a referee and one of his umpires at the weekend has "indefinitely" banned the member behind the alleged attack.

The alleged assault took place at the end of a Wexford Junior A football match between St Joseph's and Our Lady's Island on Sunday morning,.

The incident took place at Whiterock Hill, the home venue of Wexford town club St Joseph's.

Following this incident, and a number of others involving officials in the county, Wexford GAA referees have been invited to a meeting in Chadwicks Wexford Park this evening, where chairman Micheal Martin will reaffirm his support for them.

Joseph's confirmed that a meeting of the executive committee of the club took place yesterday, and that the decision was take to ban the person at the centre of the alleged incident.

"Following a meeting of the executive committee of St. Joseph's GAA club, a decision has been taken to suspend, indefinitely, the club member at the centre of the alleged incident at our junior football game on Sunday morning," the club said in a statement.

"This suspension is with immediate effect. A full investigation is underway by our club disciplinary committee along with Wexford Co Board and the CCC."

An Garda Síochána yesterday confirmed that they are investing the alleged assault, while Wexford GAA condemned the attack on officials and said that it will offer assistance to the Gardaí.
