West Ham: Scamacca could soon do the 'impossible' at London Stadium

West Ham star Gianluca Scamacca is on the verge of overtaking Michail Antonio as the club’s first choice striker, according to journalist Paul Brown.

The Italy international was forced to remain patient in his early days as a Hammers player but is gradually working his way into David Moyes’ team.

Scamacca made the £30.5m move from Sassuolo in the summer following his fine goalscoring numbers in Serie A.

But with Antonio’s exploits over the last couple of years, the frontman started the season on the bench and was picked from the off just once in the Premier League in the first two months.

Scamacca was therefore restricted to mainly outings in the Europa Conference League and caught the eye by scoring in both play-off legs against Viborg FF.

He found the net for a third time in Europe in the win at Silkeborg IF before the break and with his form impossible to ignore, he was rewarded with a start against Wolves.

And the 23-year-old stepped up to the plate, scoring a spectacular opener before repeating the feat against Fulham on Sunday.

With Scamacca now the club’s top goalscorer, Brown reckons he’s not far off becoming a regular in the side.

He told GIVEMEPSPORT: “A year or so ago, it seemed impossible that anyone would ever usurp Antonio as West Ham’s first choice striker, even when he wasn’t scoring, he gives you so much else, his work rate and dependability and the fact that he just bothers defenders for 90 minutes was so important to West Ham.

“But ultimately, the club needs goals and it’s important to try and get Scamacca out there firing, so I think he does have a genuine chance to get a run in the team, if he keeps his form going.”
