Welling United manager Ryan Maxwell reacts to 1-0 win over Ramsgate in Isthmian Premier

Welling manager Ryan Maxwell claims he is “content” with their bright start to the season.

The Wings sit third in the Isthmian Premier after a fourth win in five games on Saturday, defeating Ramsgate 1-0 at Park View Road.

It was Welling's fourth clean sheet - as many as they kept throughout last season.

The only blemish on their record is a 4-1 loss at Leatherhead in the opening week of the campaign, when they shipped four goals in a woeful first-half display.

“I’m content with that,” said Maxwell. “I'll be honest, the half at Leatherhead still annoys me to this day.

“I'm not good at letting those kind of things go, unfortunately. But I've also got a point of reference now, haven't I? To highlight why that happened that day and to never let it happen again.

“It happened so early that I can use it as a positive in the long run.”

While Ramsgate missed some late opportunities to rescue a point, Welling defended well for long periods.

Maxwell had to use all the resources available in order to get his team across the line.

“We don't want to be expansive so we score two and concede because we don't need to score two,” added the Welling boss. “We just need to keep the one.

“The subs had to come on and just do the job. Again, it's important that you come on and do the job because one player not doing it, it can all unravel really quickly in a game like that with 15 minutes to go. That’s a long time in football.

“It was important that they accepted that they were going into a game that was 1-0 and I'm happy for it to stay that way. That's what I told them when they came on.
