Welling United manager Ryan Maxwell on their opening-day Isthmian Premier win over Whitehawk as goals from Chris Arthur and new signing Nahum Melvin-Lambert earn three points

Manager Ryan Maxwell says there’s much more to come from Welling United after their opening-day victory.

The Wings launched their Isthmian Premier campaign with a professional 2-0 home win over Whitehawk on Saturday.

Veteran defender Chris Arthur broke the deadlock in the 81st minute and new signing Nahum Melvin-Lambert scored an injury-time clincher in front of a big home crowd of 927.

It was a team effort for Maxwell, who takes his side to newly-promoted Leatherhead tonight (7.45pm).

“It’s always good to get off the board quickly,” said Maxwell.

“It’s all about three points in the first game of the season.

“Everyone just wants those points, so to get them on the opening day, in front of a good crowd, was fantastic.

“Performance is secondary but I thought it was a good, professional performance - an all-round strong performance.

“There were a couple of standout performers but in general it was a collective performance.

“You’ve only got to look at the subs that came on. Two combined for a goal to cement the win.

“I’ve said all along it’s going to be a squad campaign and it’s good to see the boys that came on reinforce that.

“I saw glimpses of what we’ve been working on.

“Like every team, there’s a little bit of tension, and a few nerves, which is to be expected on the first game.

“There’s much more to come from us but having watched the game back, you can see it’s been ingrained in them what it is we’re looking for them to do.

“It’s early days for everybody but I was pleased with what I saw.”

Maxwell was delighted to see Arthur - his trusted defender who followed him to Welling from Sittingbourne last year - get the opener after a pre-season disrupted by injury.
