Welling United manager Ryan Maxwell is fixing the Wings’ defensive issues away from home after a third 4-1 defeat this season sees them knocked out of the FA Cup

Ryan Maxwell is determined to address Welling’s defensive issues on the road following their FA Cup exit.

The Wings suffered a third 4-1 defeat in five away games on Saturday as Dulwich Hamlet ended their hopes of a cup run in the second qualifying round.

That’s in stark contrast to their home form, where Welling have conceded only two goals in six successive home victories in league and cup this season to sit joint-top of the Isthmian Premier.

“It was very frustrating on Saturday,” said Maxwell. “We have to hold our hands up and say we were at fault, individually, for all their goals.

“That’s really disappointing because we’ve been so good defensively at home, the best in the league, but individual errors away from home have cost us.

“We need to rectify that and if we do that, we’ll be super-strong.

“It’s something we need to fix, I’m aware of it, and we’re in the process of doing that.

“We can’t have an unbelievable home record and not replicate it away.

“It’s something we can fix and we need to fix and get to the bottom of.

“That’s my job, I know what the issue is and I’m currently in the process of fixing it. Once we do that, we’ll be an absolute force both home and away.”

Jamie Reynolds scored the Welling consolation at Dulwich Hamlet as away supporters left Champion Hill wondering what might have been.

Maxwell, who led former club Sittingbourne to the FA Trophy quarter-finals two seasons ago, beating National League Southend en route, said: “I’m gutted for the fans.

“I’m fortunate enough to have had a great cup run at my previous club and it was a fantastic, romantic journey, with the cameras there and beating teams one, two, three leagues above. I wanted that for our fans.
