'We all love a curry': Restaurant plans for Stockport Pyramid get huge support - but some aren't so sure

News that Stockport's famous pyramid could be turned into a HUGE curry house and banqueting hall took took the town by surprise. The Manchester Evening News revealed that the owner of the award-winning restaurant Royal Nawaab was in 'advanced' talks over making the landmark on the side of the M60 its new home in the north west.

The chain currently has two restaurants in London. Until earlier this year, it also had a popular venue on the site of a former cinema on the A6 Stockport Road in Levenshulme.

The Yew Street pyramid, which was built in the 1980s and opened its doors in 1992, has been empty for over five years after previous occupants The Co-op relocated to Manchester city centre. It was meant to be one of five pyramids built in the area to create Manchester's own 'Valley of Kings' along the River Mersey, a nod to ancient Egypt.

If the plan goes ahead, the restaurant would be the first tenant under new owners Eamar Developments (UK) following the building's purchase in 2019.

Shoppers in Stockport town centre told the Manchester Evening News they would be thrilled to see the pyramid brought back to life. Christine Stirling, 70, from Edgeley, said: "It'll be great for it to be actually be used as it's been empty for such a long time now.

"I mean, I would have preferred it to be a big Marks & Spencer, but I'll take a curry house.

"I'd be able to walk there from mine. I really like the Royal Nawaab as well - I used to go there when it was in Levenshulme. It's such a famous building.
