Wayne Rooney names the Manchester United transfer he is surprised Erik ten Hag sanctioned

Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has admitted he is surprised Erik ten Hag sold Anthony Elanga to Nottingham Forest in the summer.

As part of the Reds' summer overhaul, Ten Hag allowed plenty of players to leave the club. One of those who exited was the 21-year-old Swede who made 55 appearances for the senior team.

United received a fee of £15m for the winger who has blossomed at the City Ground. So far, Elanga has bagged five goals and seven assists for Forest despite his team struggling at the wrong end of the Premier League.

The forward goes up against his old club for the third time this season in the FA Cup tonight. Before the game on Match of the Day, Rooney was asked whether he was surprised to see Elanga sold in the summer.

"Yeah [I am surprised they let Anthony Elanga go] I think it came more from him wanting to go and get games," the United legend explained, "but it is so refreshing to see a young player running off the ball. I think nowadays everybody wants the ball to feet and the way Man City play but what you see from Anthony is him running off the ball.

"That is what we want to see from Marcus Rashford, more running off the ball. I think he will be a danger tonight and United will need to keep an eye on him."

Should United beat Forest this evening they will face either Liverpool or Southampton in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.
