WATCH | The epic lap in Brazil that landed Kevin Magnussen, Haas their first F1 pole

Kevin Magnussen and the Haas Formula 1 team shocked the world when they took a surprise pole position in qualifying for the 2022 Brazilian Grand Prix. The result was a shock for the driver and his team, but it provided the most immense joy in the team's seven-season history in the sport.

"It's a great moment for Haas F1 Team," team boss Guenther Steiner said when the position was confirmed.

"We've waited seven years for this, and we work hard; it shows again that hard work and determination pay off. You have to be in the right place at the right time, and I think we didn't luck into this. We worked hard to be there."

With rain threatening qualifying throughout, it was all to play for in Q3 - the final part of qualifying. Haas managed to send Magnussen out first, and he pulled off the quickest Q3 lap to secure pole. After that, no one could improve their times. And with a few minutes left on the clock, it was definitive that no one would be able to challenge his 1:11.674.

Magnussen will start today's Sprint Race from the front, with the result at the end of the 100km (24-lap) dash determining the starting grid for tomorrow's Grand Prix.

The backup takes it

Magnussen had a challenging time in F1 since entering the sport in 2014. Driving for McLaren-Mercedes, he performed admirably, but Fernando Alonso's arrival at the start of 2015 meant that he was relegated to a reserve driver role. Later that year, the team released him from his duties, and he signed with Renault for 2016.
