Warrington Wolves in a good place despite horrendous Leeds Rhinos defeat, insists Daryl Powell

Daryl Powell admitted “nobody wants to go through what they are watching” after furious Warrington Wolves fans booed off his misfiring team following a thumping home defeat by Leeds Rhinos. The Wire were battered 40-4 at an angry Halliwell Jones Stadium and huge sections of the home support marched out of the ground in disgust with 20 minutes remaining.

Yet Powell insisted “tonight can’t derail us” and claimed his men could still make the play-offs despite tonight’s horror show. The Wolves were booed off at half-time and again at the final hooter – and head coach Powell told Sky Sports: “Does it hurt? Like hell it does.

“It’s tough and I thought Leeds were excellent tonight. We just, at the moment, are up and down. A couple of weeks ago we had an outstanding performance [against St Helens] but tonight we weren’t good enough.

“We’re training pretty well but that hasn’t converted tonight into a performance. I thought Kruise Leeming was outstanding and caused us a whole heap of trouble.

“We just didn’t handle that well at all. Look, in the second half we had 11 sets and only completed four – we aren’t winning any game like that. There were some key lessons and we’re on a journey but look, I understand the fans’ frustrations, 100 per cent.

“Nobody wants to go through what they’re watching and the frustrating thing is that you see a pretty strong effort against St Helens. But that is clearly not good enough. I’m not going to argue that – we’ve got a lot to improve on and from a consistency point of view, it’s in there but it’s not in there often enough. That’s disappointing for everybody.”
