Josh Charnley nearing Warrington exit as prospect of mid-season move increases

Josh Charnley could depart Warrington before the end of his contract after clubs were notified he is available for a mid-season move. Charnley's contract with Warrington expires at the end of the current season, with the former England winger set to leave the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

He will not be offered new terms by Warrington and has struggled to make his mark under Daryl Powell this season. Several clubs have expressed an interest in signing Charnley for 2023 but Rugby League Live has learned he could switch clubs before then.

Charnley's management have informed clubs in Super League and the Championship about the possibility of Warrington being open to letting the winger go with immediate effect, sparking interest from clubs who have the salary cap space to accommodate Charnley.

With a severance payment in his contract from Warrington likely if he leaves mid-season, it means the former England international could be available at a reduced price for the remainder of 2022 before signing a long-term deal for 2023 and beyond.

Warrington coach Powell confirmed last month Charnley's future was elsewhere next year, stating: “He won’t be offered a contract for next year.” It has already been reported that clubs including Leigh Centurions have shown an interest in the former Wigan star already.

Leigh are believed to be monitoring Charnley's availability mid-season too, but sources have told Rugby League Live no deal has yet been struck.
