Wales stun Ireland as under-20s pull off remarkable win

Wales U20s produced a defensive masterclass to claim a gutsy 20-12 victory over Ireland U20s at Rodney Parade.

This was a victory built on sheer guts and determination with Wales captain Harry Beddall putting in a phenomenal 34 tackles. Ireland had 74% territory and 63% possession but could not find a way to break down a ferocious Wales defence in the second-half.

An early penalty try and a touchdown from Steffan Emanuel along with eight points from the boots of Harri Wilde and Harri Ford got Wales over the line. All Ireland could muster were two tries from Henry Walker and Eoghan Smyth, while Sam Wisniewski kicked two points.

Wales couldn't have asked for a better start when captain Beddall won a penalty at the breakdown. The hosts went to the corner and very nearly shoved Ireland back over their own line. Ireland halted Wales' surge but the hosts pushed them backwards at a rate of knots at the resulting scrum.

Wales made no mistake this time around with Ireland forced to illegally sack the maul which left the referee no choice but to award Whiffin's side a penalty try. Ireland came close to claiming their first try only for Charlie Maloney to knock the ball on in the act of scoring.

The visitors looked dangerous in attack but after spilling the ball it was hacked upfield by Evan Minto which allowed Emanuel to gather and score Wales' second try which Wilde converted. But Ireland began to put pressure on the Wales line and claimed a try at the stroke of half-time when Smyth powered over from short range meaning the visitors held a slender 14-12 lead at the interval.
