Unlikely 30p cupboard ingredient is an 'extremely pleasant' addition to curry

Cooks are calling this secret 30p ingredient that you will already have in your cupboard an “unexpected but extremely pleasant” addition to your curry.

Although it can be stirred in to any tomato based curry you can also add this powder, which will likely sit with your baking goods, into the seasoning for your chicken.

Cocoa powder, which can be snapped up for just £3 at Asda, averaging at about 30p a teaspoon, is all you need to change the flavour profile of your curry and level up your Friday night dinner.

Reddit user Kosine shared their full recipe using the cocoa powder addition saying it was “a savoury recipe, not a spicy one, but it does have a bit of kick to it. So my apologies to the thrill-seekers: this IS for the faint of heart, and you won't even feel a tickle as it goes down.”

The user said the “basis of recipe is pretty much basic European-style curry, with a bit of roux added for a Japanese-style texture.” They added: “Unfortunately, it is not a curry that uses cocoa as a primary flavoring. Instead it is used to enhance existing curry flavor." They said the cocoa powder adds "a lot of depth and richness" to the dish.

Another Reddit user, Xnecronteryx, commented: “I made this dish this evening. First let me say that the cocoa was an unexpected but extremely pleasant addition. Second I strongly advise a little chili pepper action to give it some heat. Chili spice works oh so well with cocoa.”

To make the curry, the user says you'll need a marinade of made of ginger root, garlic and garam masala. Cube the chicken into pieces no bigger than an inch.
