Unisa, Gauteng Sports Dept, jump on Banyana celebration bandwagon with bursaries, R3.2 million

The rewards keep rolling in for Banyana Banyana, with the University of South Africa (Unisa) being the generous benefactors to the Women's African Cup of Nations champions.

The biggest tertiary institution in the country said in a statement that it will make available a special bursary program for the 23 players in accordance with the universities admission policies.

The bursaries will be available for the players from January next year onward and the team received hearty congratulations from Unisa's vice-chancellor and principal Puleng LenkaBula.

LenkaBula said Banyana's achievement not only resonates with the university's values, but hopes it will inspire a new generation of young girls to believe in sport.

"The herstoric victory of South Africa in the African football scene after twenty-six years is very inspirational to Unisa, the youth, and South Africa as a whole," LenkaBula said in a statement.

The provinces have also rewarded players, with the latest being the Gauteng's department of sports, arts and culture setting aside R3.2 million for Banyana Banyana and the development of women's football in the province.
