'Understood...' - Miles Starforth says 'excellent' 25 y/o is now 'set to leave' Newcastle

Newcastle United journalist Miles Starforth has said that Freddie Woodman is now ‘set to leave’ St. James’ Park.

With both Martin Dubravka and Karl Darlow lining up between the sticks in the North East in recent seasons, Woodman has become somewhat of a forgotten man.

Before he was shipped out to AFC Bournemouth on loan in the January transfer window, the goalkeeper made just five senior appearances last term, and has only made nine in total spanning over six separate campaigns (Transfermarkt).

Taking to Twitter, Starforth of The Shields Gazette has said that Woodman is now ‘set to leave’, with some interest from a number of clubs in the Premier League, as well as Preston North End from the Championship:

“Preston want Freddie Woodman, but not a done deal – yet. Also understood to be some PL interest in the goalkeeper, who’s set to leave Newcastle this summer. Needs first-team football.”

Unfortunately for Woodman, his time now seems to be up on Tyneside.

The 25-year-old needs to be playing regularly, and it is clear that he will not get that if he stays at the Magpies, especially considering PIF are now keen on a move for Burnley’s Nick Pope.

It will be a shame for a player who has shown promise, as former Toon ace Steve Howey hailed him as an ‘excellent’ ‘keeper after a successful loan spell at Swansea City, but with Dubravka and Darlow as options, and Eddie Howe’s side looking at other goalkeepers, the summer is the time to move him on.
