UFC 279: Nate Diaz explains how Khamzat Chimaev main event came together

Nate Diaz has explained how his UFC 279 main event against Khamzat Chimaev finally got booked.

For the longest time prior to it being officially announced, fans had been hearing rumblings that Nate Diaz would be locking horns with Khamzat Chimaev. Some immediately dismissed the idea whereas others were genuinely curious to hear why the Ultimate Fighting Championship had opted to book a contest that, on the face of it, seemed to be quite one-sided.

Alas, you can never know what’s going to happen until two fighters actually get in there and compete, which is why the masses are so intrigued to see what happens on Saturday night in Las Vegas.

Before that, though, we were treated to the release of the latest UFC Countdown show which features a tremendous preview of the impending collision between these rivals.

During the broadcast, Diaz was asked about how we arrived at him taking on ‘Borz’.

“I just asked for five, six, seven of the top guys, and you gave me none of them. Then they tried to give me a guy who hadn’t earned his keep, hadn’t done his thing.

“Have him fight Burns. Have him fight Burns, if he can beat Burns, then I’ll fight him. You know what I’m saying?”

“Here we are now. He did his thing, so I’ve got a fight on my hands.”

This will mark the first time that Chimaev has ever served as a main event player on the pay-per-view level in the UFC.

The stakes are unbelievably high for Khamzat Chimaev with the popular opinion being that he will finally secure a crack at the UFC welterweight championship if he can get past Diaz at the T-Mobile Arena.
