Two signings and four sales - what Manchester United need to do in the final five days of the transfer window

There is not much time left now for Erik ten Hag to put the finishing touches on his Manchester United squad before the end of the summer transfer window.

United have already spent £174 million on three permanent new arrivals this summer, while progress has been made in shifting players, with five players sold already.

Yet there is still more work to be done. In an ideal world, United would add another couple of faces to their first-team squad by Friday's deadline, while there are still others who should be sold if possible.

It is all easier said than done, though. United are constrained by Premier League profit and sustainability standards, and any new additions must be offset by sales.

With only a handful of days remaining, here is what MEN writers think United must do before deadline day.

The recent injury to Luke Shaw has certainly given United plenty of food for thought, but I still think signing another midfielder should be the outfield priority for the final week of the window.

Ten Hag has enough at his disposal to get by at left-back until Tyrell Malacia or Shaw are available; Diogo Dalot is capable of playing on the left, and youngster Alvaro Fernandez has shown a lot of promise in that role.

Though even when he has a fully fit midfield, they lack enough reliable senior options. Sofyan Amrabat and Ryan Gravenberch aren't exactly standout options, but they are both attainable and would be better-suited than other reserve members of the first-team squad.

It seems a matter of when rather than if a new goalkeeper is added, and that should allow United to push ahead with plans to sell Dean Henderson.
