Twitchy Celtic fans need to calm down but there are still some concerns and Brendan Rodgers can't hang about - Chris Sutton

There are always knee jerk reactions in pre-season and I see some Celtic fans are getting a tad twitchy after the defeat in Yokohama the other night.

They need to calm down. These games will be forgotten about in no time and Brendan Rodgers was right when he said there’s no need to panic. It’s madness to read too much into pre-season matches. I can remember one summer with Norwich City when we lost every single bounce game before the start of the campaign.

Everyone and their grannies had us as favourites to get relegation – and instead we nearly ended up winning the Premier League. We had a few dull ones under Martin O’Neill and don’t forget West Ham stuck six past Celtic at Parkhead with Ange Postecoglou in charge. Remind me how that season turned out? There’s no need to go overboard this week and you do have to cut them a bit of slack.

They’d just got off the plane on the other side of the world and by all accounts the heat was brutal and Yokohama are in the middle of their season. That doesn’t mean they get a free pass though. There might not be any need for panic but there are still some concerns.

It looks like Brendan Rodgers is addressing the centre back situation with the move for Maik Nawrocki. There’s no doubt it is an area that needs to be looked at with Cameron Carter-Vickers coming back from knee surgery. Rodgers has Carl Starfelt and Yuki Kobayashi, but the latter still looks raw to me.

Nawrocki sounds like he would be a decent addition and I’m sure there will be a few more. There is still plenty of time in the window and a while before the Champions League but that doesn’t mean they can hang about.
