Tributes paid to 'gentle giant' new dad allegedly murdered in south Manchester

A family has paid tribute to a 'gentle giant' new dad who died after being attacked in south Manchester. Police said Warren Burns, 37, died in hospital on Thursday, four days after being 'assaulted by intruders' at a house on Heysham Avenue in Withington.

Brandon White, 20, of Radstock Close, Fallowfield, has been charged with Mr Burns' murder. He was due to appear at Manchester magistrates' court today (Friday).

A second man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody for questioning, while a 19-year-old woman, arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, has been bailed. In a statement Mr Burns' family described him as a 'much loved son, brother and partner'.

They said: "Warren had only just become a father which he absolutely loved. He was a larger than life character with a gentle soul, often referred to as a gentle giant.

"He was very fun loving, and livened up any event he attended. Life will not be the same without him.

"It's heart-breaking that he will never see his son grow up and experience all that life has to offer. He was simply was the best, a true legend and he will be greatly missed."

Det Chief Insp Nichola McCulloch, of GMP's Major Incident Team, said: "Firstly, I would like to extend my condolences to the victim's family at this extremely difficult time. This is a shocking incident which has resulted in a tragic death and the investigation team are working around the clock to find and arrest those responsible and bring them to justice.
