Tribute left outside petrol station where man 'set himself on fire' with forecourt taped off

Flowers have been left outside a fuel station where a man 'set himself on fire'. The forecourt at Tesco Blackley is taped off for a second morning after tragedy unfolded on Monday evening (September 4).

Emergency services responded to concerns for the welfare of a man at the supermarket filling station, on Victoria Avenue East, at around 7.35pm. It is understood the man set himself on fire.

He was rushed to hospital with life-threatening burns after being treated by crews at the scene. The Manchester Evening News understands he has since died from his injuries.

Outside the forecourt this morning (September 6), a sign tells customers the Tesco fuel station is 'closed until further notice'. The station's entrance has also been taped off.

A bunch of flowers has been placed by a hedge outside the station. Eyewitnesses told the M.E.N. how members of the public had put the fire out before crews arrived on the scene.

One woman said: "I was in the garden with my partner and we heard a commotion. That's not that unusual for this area.

"Then I heard a beeping noise, like somebody was pressing and pressing and pressing the horn of their car. And there was shouting, men shouting.

"We stood on the bench of the garden to get a proper look and my partner contacted the fire service. Within minutes there were people, residents, swarming around trying to extinguish the man with a fire extinguisher and with buckets of water."

Another eyewitness added: "Me and my fiancé went to Tesco to do some shopping, and the next thing about ten people all ran in screaming and shouting 'he's on, fire he's on fire'. Then people started to run and panic
