Transfer clues, selection hints and more to look out for in Leicester City pre-season matches

Seven weeks on from the final game of last season, Leicester City will play again this weekend. They host Notts County at their Seagrave training base on Saturday in the first of six friendlies that Brendan Rodgers will use to get his side in the best shape possible for the new Premier League campaign.

While there are no new signings for City supporters yet to feast their eyes on, there is plenty to look out for during the next month leading up to the start of competitive action against Brentford. Here’s what fans should be watching out for.

Last summer’s pre-season fixtures provided clear evidence that, after his spell with Luton, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall was ready to be a member of Rodgers’ first-team squad. While his levels in training sessions would have been important, it was his showings in the matches, particularly against QPR and Villarreal, that gave the definitive proof he was comfortably at home alongside City’s star players.

Trying to emulate Dewsbury-Hall this time around are the likes of Daniel Iversen, Callum Wright, and George Hirst. Iversen returns having won the player of the year award at a Championship side in Preston, just as Dewsbury-Hall did, and so feels most capable of making the leap, albeit it can be difficult to judge a goalkeeper’s ability over just a couple of games.

For attacking midfielder Wright and striker Hirst, who both excelled at League One level last season, the task is harder, with the jump up to Premier League standard greater. Matches alongside the senior first-team players should show if they have what it takes, and if they can clinch a place in the squad for the whole campaign.

As pre-season progresses and more of City’s international stars not only return, but get up to speed
