Tragedy of teen who died weeks after first parent-free holiday to Majorca

A teenager who returned from her first holiday abroad without her parents with a sore throat was given a heartbreaking diagnosis and died weeks later

Leah Rogers, 17, returned from Majorca what seemed to be a bad case of tonsillitis, something she often came down with. Yet after her condition worsened and her family were told she had just weeks to live.

Her parents have now spoken of their heartbreak as Leah's family and friends raise awareness of the condition the rare condition that took her.

Leah, from south Wales, was a typical 17-year-old girl who "loved life" and "loved people" mum Kath Rogers, 57, said. At school she had achieved As and Bs in her 12 GCSEs and planned to train as an intensive care nurse.

The teenager from Briton Ferry near Port Talbot adored her older siblings and her niece and nephew and had a big group of friends Leah was very mature for her age, Kath said and friends would refer to her as the 'mother' of the group, Wales Online report.

Leah and her elder sister had planned to go on holiday to Palma Nova in May last year with a group of friends. The family had visited the holiday destination on the island of Majorca many times and it was one of Leah's favourite places

When Leah's sister was no longer able to make the trip her parents were reluctant to let Leah go as she was still only 17. But they decided she would be sensible enough to go along with some of her sister's older friends and she went ahead with the holiday.

Leah had a fabulous time but a couple of days after she came back from the trip she fell ill. Her parents rang the out-of-hours surgery and Leah was then prescribed antibiotics.
