This is the boy, 7, who died after being hit by BMW while playing in the street

A seven-year-old boy who died after being hit by a car while playing in the street has been named by police.

Jack Rook was struck down just yards from his home in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, at about 6pm yesterday. He was rushed to hospital by air ambulance, but died a short time later.

The driver of a black BMW X4 - a man his 30s - has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving, the Mirror reports. Witnesses have previously reported that the boy became trapped underneath a vehicle while residents reported several police and fire service teams in the area.

West Yorkshire Police has today released a picture of Jack, saying his family are being supported by officers. A spokesperson said: "Police investigating Wednesday’s fatal road traffic collision on Longfield Avenue can now name the victim of the incident as seven year-old Jack Rook from Golcar.

"Officers continue to support Jack’s parents and also continue to request their privacy is respected at what is clearly a dreadful time. Enquiries into the collision remain ongoing and the Major Collision and Enquiry Team continue to appeal for witnesses."

Earlier today, flowers and toy cars were laid at the scene of the tragedy by heartbroken friends and relatives. A neighbour said: "The first thing I knew was when the fire engine turned up. It is absolutely shocking, he was car mad.

"I often saw him playing in the street. I could not believe when I saw him being given CPR by the side of the road. He was a lovely little boy."

As well as flowers, toys, notes, and a teddy there were also child’s drawings from his friends left on the pavement under a garden
