Tottenham: Paratici signing already 'close to being one of best' in PL

Tottenham‘s Cristian Romero is becoming one of the best defenders in the Premier League, according to Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge.

The Argentina international spent much of his first three months at Spurs out injured but he has quickly become a key player under Antonio Conte.

It’s easy to forget that Romero is only on loan from Atalanta, although he should eventually join Tottenham in the near future for £46.7m after an obligation to buy was included in his deal last summer.

Since recovering from a hamstring problem in early February, Romero has come into his own and has already made himself a permanent fixture alongside Ben Davies and Eric Dier in the back three.

According to WhoScored, Davinson Sanchez is the only centre-back to have outperformed the 23-year-old this season, although Romero leads the way in the majority of defensive metrics.

Romero has made the most interceptions (1.4), most tackles (2.4) and third-most clearances (2.8) in the Tottenham squad, while his passing success rate (87%) is the second-best in the squad in terms of defensive players.

Furthermore, Romero showed that he can be a danger in the opposition box when scoring the opener at Brighton last week, although his first goal in English football came in fortuitous fashion.

Despite his occasional lapses of concentration, Bridge believes that Romero is quickly becoming one of the top defenders in the Premier League.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “I think he’s close to being one of the best defenders in the league, he’s just so good. He got the better of Antonio nearly every time against West Ham.”
