Tottenham boss addresses Harry Kane 'leaving gesture' amid Manchester United interest

Tottenham Hotspur caretaker manager Ryan Mason has dismissed suggestions Harry Kane was saying goodbye to the North London club's fans after their 3-1 defeat by Brentford.

Kane gave Spurs the lead on Saturday with a superb strike inside ten minutes. However, his team collapsed in the second half as a Bryan Mbeumo brace and Yoane Wissa goal put a serious dent in Tottenham's European ambitions.

After the full-time whistle, the Tottenham players re-emerged onto the pitch to thank the fans for their support. But, most supporters opted to leave early after a season of disappointment.

As Spurs' key man made his way around the pitch with his family, he was spotted waving to the supporters leading to rather weak suggestions that he was saying goodbye to the fans. This theory was put to Mason who quickly dismissed it.

"He waves at the crowd every season," he told The Telegraph. "I saw him waving two years ago and you guys [reporters] were convinced he was leaving. He was just thanking the fans as he does every season."

MEN Sport understands Erik ten Hag has made signing Kane his number one transfer priority this summer as the Reds look to strengthen in forward areas.

United are wary of being strung along by Spurs chairman Daniel Levy who has been reluctant to sell the 29-year-old previously. Ten Hag has lined up a number of alternative options should the Kane deal fall through.

These options include Napoli's Victor Osimhen, Atalanta's Rasmus Hojlund and Eintracht Frankfurt's Randal Kolo Muani. Kane's Tottenham contract expires in 2024 leading to speculation the club may cash in, instead of allowing him to leave for free at the end of next season.
