Ebbsfleet United 1 Sholing 2 match report FA Cup third qualifying round: Fleet dumped out despite Daniel Ogunleye’s opener
Ebbsfleet were dumped out of the FA Cup by lower-league Sholing at Stonebridge Road on Saturday.
The Fleet took the lead but Sholing keeper Jack Turner produced an inspired first-half display to keep his side in the tie - and they hit back to land a place in the fourth qualifying round.
Ebbsfleet made seven changes from the side that drew at Slough on Tuesday in the league, including a first start of the campaign for keeper Matt Hall.
Sholing named Kristian Shevchenko, son of former Chelsea player and FA Cup winner Andriy Shevchenko on the bench.
Referee Jordan Crossley had an early decision to make when he showed Sholing forward Jake McCarthy a yellow card for a poor challenge on Camron Gbadebo.
The Fleet then started to get going, Olly Box intercepted a backpass but ran out of space before his diving header from a Harvey Walker cross went over the bar.
Sholing lost former Fleet defender Sam Magri to injury inside the first 20 minutes and they were behind almost immediately as Walker did well down the left wing and crossed for Daniel Ogunleye to turn home his second goal in as many games.
The Fleet piled on the pressure and keeper Jake Turner produced an excellent double save to deny Olly Box and then Ben Chapman in quick succession.
Then just past the half-hour, Turner pushed away Walker’s cross-shot and then produced arguably his best stop to turn away Barnes’ follow-up.
Manktelow turned a close-range attempt wide and the Fleet’s profligacy in front of goal was punished five minutes before the break when Tommy-Lee Higgs arrowed a low left-foot shot inside the far post to level the scores.
